Anyone who learns of the sad murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray would be shocked and disturbed as much as her community.

Twelve-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray came from North Houston. Her mother, 27-year-old Alexis Nungaray, along with a younger brother lived in an apartment building. Known for her sensitive disposition and vibrant laughter, she was a vivid and loving little girl with a bright future. Her life, rich in young aspirations and hopes, was sadly cut short.

Police say Jocelyn slipped out of her family’s residence late on June 16, 2024, walked to a 7-11 convenience store at the corner of Rankin Road and Kuykendahl, then spoke on her phone with her 13-year-old boyfriend.

Two men approached her in the store and asked for directions, according to authorities’ inspection of the CCTV footage. The men then escorted her to a bridge in the 400 block of Rankin, where they attacked her, assaulted her, tied up her arms and legs, and strangled her before dumping her body into a shallow swamp, according to authorities.

The two men in custody, have been charged with murder in Jocelyn’s death. Both men have been arrested and remain in jail on a $10 million bond. Jocelyn’s age made both men ineligible for the death penalty under Texas law.

However, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg stated that if proof of sexual assault was revealed, the case would be suitable for the death sentence, and the state would be allowed to request no bond.
