In Nigeria today, Gowon is still referred to as one of the iconic leaders of the country. When he was 31, he was named the Head of State and led Nigeria out of the national civil war.
He’s also regarded and respected for his leadership and efforts in maintaining unity in the nation at a time when the country was on the brink of collapse. He’s famously known for his “No victor, no vanquished” speech.
