Dear Hauppauge Community,

A short time ago Principal Gagliardi sent a heartfelt message to the Bretton Woods Elementary School family regarding some tragic news. My message now is meant to share this heartbreaking information with the entire Hauppauge community.

The Hauppauge School District is in deep mourning today as we have learned of the sudden passing of Lara Damadeo, a current fourth grade teacher at Bretton Woods Elementary School. As both a graduate of Hauppauge and current staff member, this loss has left a profound impact on all of us who were fortunate enough to have known her.

Ms. Damadeo began her full-time teaching career in Hauppauge in 2000, and she will be remembered for her passion and creativity in the classroom, as well as her dedication, kindness and professionalism. As a former Eagle and member of the Hauppauge High School Class of 1995, she was an outstanding student achieving membership in the National Honor Society. Outside of the classroom, Lara excelled as a dedicated ballet dancer, and was also a member of the Interact Club, practicing the “power of service above self.” Both as a student and teacher, Ms. Damadeo has left an indelible mark on our community. As we all process this terribly sad loss, please know our support staff, teachers, and administrators will be available to support the needs of our students and families in the days ahead.

Lastly, we have a saying in Hauppauge, “Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle,” which reflects the lifelong connection our students and staff members feel to our special school district and greater Hauppauge community. Clearly Lara Damadeo embodied this quote during her life as an Eagle. Let us come together to remember the remarkable impact she has had on our Hauppauge school family. Please join me in extending our collective prayers and deepest condolences to Ms. Damadeo’s family and friends during this difficult time.

With deepest sympathy,

Dr. Donald Murphy,
