Residents of the Garfield community were alarmed on Tuesday Morning, the 2nd of September, 2025 around 9:07 A.M.
Sounds of gunfire echoed through the intersection of Palisades Avenue and Somerset Street, an intersection used by daily commuters, parents and students alike, as well as busy business owners.
With the timely arrival of the police, a thorough search was carried out but unfortunately no victim or suspect were in sight.
All that was found were shell casings scattered across the street. The incident left residents of such a busy intersection in a state of unsettling silence
A passerby shared with the authorities and made the statement that “it could have been any of us” emphasizing that moments before the gunfire sounds were heard she had just walked her child to a school relatively close to the intersection.
Authorities have been able to reassure the residents that the incident was indeed reported and the public no longer faces any form of danger.
Although the crime scene is still riddled with tape and detectives and police officers canvassing through evidence still leaves the community shaken.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Garfield Police are currently in a joint investigation.
Nearby residents still hope that some form of answer and peace returns to the streets of Palisades Avenue and Somerset Street.
