According to reports, he passed away due to complications from surgery following a fall. He died sadly at the age of 76 years.
Sonny Smart unfortunately experienced a fall and fractured his hip while in New Orleans. Reports have it that it was a Super Bowl game where Kirby’s Bulldogs were defeated.
His family had taken him to Ochsner Hospital to get the best care. He also underwent surgery where he eventually did not recover.
After his death, the family thanked the Ochsner Hospital for how they took care of their beloved and ensured he got the best of the best care.

Sonny Smart passed away on January 4, 2025, at 12:15 a.m., surrounded by his wife, Sharon, and their three children: Karl, Kirby and Kendall.
Sonny fell while walking during the day on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans and fractured his hip. He was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery; unfortunately, complications arose. He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries.
The Smart family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the Ochsner hospital and medical staff for the exceptional care provided to Sonny.”
Smart, known for his long and successful coaching career, led teams at Holtsville High School, Bainbridge High School, and Rabun County High School, earning regional and state championships.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon, and their three children, including Kirby Smart, head coach of the University of Georgia Bulldogs. Sonny’s influence on Georgia football remains significant, with his legacy continuing through his family and the players he mentored.
