New South Wales Plans To Dutch Outdated RSL And Club Rules
The State Government have made announcement with plans to ditch outdated RSL and Club Rules in New South Wales where residents living within 5km of the venue
requires a membership. The 5km rule has been responsible for frustration and unexpected paperwork over the years for people just wanting to enter their local club or RSL for a meal or drink.
Under current law, New South Wales residents living within 5km of their local club must sign up as a member and pay a membership fee, demonstrate membership of a similar club elsewhere, or attend as the guest of an existing member, which will increase participation in club activities, enhance social interactions among residents, boost revenue for local clubs and RSLs, greater accessibility to community events. The government says current restrictions will reduce the likelihood of people regularly attending their local club, or even trying it out for the first time, while those living beyond 5km can freely sign in as visitors.
Removing the rule is also expected to encourage more local people to enjoy their nearby clubs before choosing whether or not to become a member. Clubs within the vicinity will still be able to attract new members with member-only incentives and gain access to their facilities, such as gyms and swimming pools.
The changes are part of the Minns government’s Vibrancy Reforms aimed at sweeping away red tape to help businesses and patrons. They’ll be introduced to Parliament next month.
Minister for Music and the Night-Time Economy John Graham said the 5km rule was just red tape and served no discernible purpose.
John Graham said “It has been an unwanted rite of passage for so many to be stuck in bureaucratic limbo over membership at the entry to a club when all you want to do is go inside for a drink and a meal.”
Clubs News South Wales chief executive Rebecca Riant said the change was a fantastic outcome for the industry.
“It’s about providing clubs with the choice, and for many clubs. particularly golf and sailing clubs who have social membership caps. this will make a huge difference,”
