The sudden passing away of the championship goalkeeper has sent shockwaves to the entire football world. Millwall’s 26-year-old goalkeeper, Matija Sarkic, has tragically passed away after falling ill while on international duty with Montenegro.
Who Is Matija Sarkic?
Matija Sarkic is a professional footballer who played goalkeeper and represented Montenegro at the youth and senior international levels.
Matija Sarkic’s Career As A Footballer
Sarkic’s obsession with football began at age 7 when he and his twin brother, Oliver would always commit an hour and a half to play football after school and get home very late after training. Matija Sarkic began as a defender but changed to a goalkeeper as the need for a goalkeeper came in for his Sunday league team.
Matija returned to England after signing for Aston Villa in 2015, the beginning of a wandering journey through the English league system.
How Did Matija Sarkic Die?
Sarkic was granted permission to miss the Montenegro match against Georgia to attend his twin brother; Oliver’s wedding. Having landed in the UK on Friday, Sarkic showed off his furnished apartment in Budva. However, during the early hours of Saturday morning, Matija Sarkic complained of feeling unwell and collapsed afterwards.
Borg’s girlfriend who was a nurse had performed CPR on him before the ambulance and paramedics came to perform resuscitation but all to no avail.
He passed away around 6:00 am local time. He died of sudden heart failure on June 15, 2024. Matija Sarkic died just 10 days after he was named man of the match for Montenegro in a friendly match with Belgium.

Millwall’s Tribute to Martija Sarkic.
Millwall, on its website on Saturday morning, issued a statement expressing their devastation.
It read, “Sarkic, The Lions’ number one goalkeeper, made 33 appearances for the club since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2023 Montenegro international, Matija proudly represented his country on numerous occasions.
“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time.
The club will make no further comment at this time and ask that the privacy of Matija’s family is respected.”
