What To Know About Mary MacKillop

Mary Helen Mackillop was born to Flora and Alexander who were poor Catholics and
Scottish immigrants. However, she started working at a very young age
providing for her family working in stores and as a nanny. She was educated at
home by her father who in turn would always teach the poor children in the town where she
worked as a nanny.

Growing up, Mary has always desired to be a nun but she had to work to support
her family. She met with Father Julian, got baptized, was invited by father Julian
to South Australia, and dedicated her life to God at age 24.

In her quest to start a school for the less disadvantaged, She and Father Julian
Woods opened a school using an abandoned stable in Penola. Mary MacKillop’s vision was
supported by other women who worked with her to help her actualise her visions better.

Throughout her life, Mary had faced many trials and tribulations coming her way, members
of her Order were very hostile towards her, as they did not understand the weight of her
bright visions. Mary was also cut out from the Catholic church, But it gets more interesting as
Mary is known to be a model of forgiveness who would always insist on forgiving
those who might have wronged or spoken ill of her.

She is said to have a strong advocacy for women’s rights, education, and
welfare.

Throughout her whole life, Mary had worked tirelessly to support the
poor by providing education and giving more care to the less disadvantaged mostly in the
rural areas.
