Is Russia In Olympics 2024? Here’s what Happened

Sports is an essential aspect of inter-nation building, it fosters unity and togetherness of nations. The Olympic Games stand as a symbol of global unity thereby bringing nations together for athletic activities. 

Over the years, certain countries have been banned from participating in the Olympic games due to issues of conflict, war, or violations of the rules guiding the body. With the recent involvement of Russia in a war with Ukraine, people are concerned if Russia would be allowed to participate in the upcoming Olympics or not. 

The Olympic games uphold its rules and regulations and any country that violates them faces the consequences. Will Russia be allowed to play in the 2024 Olympics?

WHAT HAPPENED TO RUSSIA?

Negative reports have earlier been made against the athletes from Russia for their involvement in taking illegal drugs to boost their performance; this was proven to be true after research was conducted by The World Anti-Doping Agency and also their conflicts with Ukraine.

Conflict and war are strictly against the rules guiding the Olympic Games and countries that are involved are never left unpenalized. 

In the recent war between Ukraine and Russia, Russians invaded Ukraine, triggering the war to explode. While The Olympic Games does not support any form of violence or war, everybody is in doubt whether Russia would participate or not.

IS RUSSIA IN OLYMPICS 2024?

Russia has been banned from participating in the 2024 Olympics due to their invasion of Ukraine which is clearly against the body’s rules. However, Russian athletes who have a good record and were not fully involved in the war are allowed to compete under a different name.

This war didn’t just affect the Russians, Belarus, which supported the Russians during the war, has also been banned. However, Russia and Belarus athletes who do not have an involvement in the way would be invited to compete under a different name with a set of rules guiding them; they would not be allowed to compete under the national flag and in opening or closing remarks. 

Russian athletes have been banned from participating in the Olympics since 2017 but were allowed to compete under “ROC” after many reports of scandals were made about them. Belarus just got banned for the first time for supporting Russia in the recent war against Ukraine.

For the 2024 Olympics games, these two countries would not be allowed to participate but would compete together as neutral athletes.
